In the Grief and Mourning of the Legendary Iranian Singer, Mohammad Reza Shajarian
The Enjoyable Voice of Difficult Times of the Iranian People!
Unfortunately and with deep sadness, Master Mohammad Reza Shajarian, after years of struggling with cancer, passed away on October 8, 2020. Although this departure was not far-fetched, it was not easy to believe either. In recent months, the pulse of millions of people has been beating with his pulse. Every hospital he was in, around was a gathering place for people who were worried about his health. People who have become accustomed to his voice and the pleasant melody of his song, who have accompanied his songs in moments of sorrow, joy, and in the lows and highs of life were afraid of losing their source of joy and hope. This has happened today and a nation is mourning him! The whispers of his songs echoed in the hearts of the mourners in front of his hospital, in the corners of the country and in the corners of mourning houses.
Mohammad Reza Shajarian was a unique singer with a unique voice and mastered his profession and it can be said that he was the most influential figure in contemporary Iranian music. He was a bridge between the old generation and the later generation of Iranian singers and had his own style. He had an admirable skill in reading Persian poetry. He read the poems as if they were rewritten. His mastery of the Persian language and its expression, like his voice, was enviable and unique. The ballads and poems of the predecessors, when recited in his style, had his stamp on them, as if they were made only for this voice, tone and expression. When he recited "from the blood of the homeland youth", one could feel that "tulip" could be grown in this scourged homeland. When the sphere of the homeland became dark, the sound of his rising and the invitation to "come along" stirred the souls and made the wills more determined. Few people can be found who, like Shajarian, have become a national symbol for a wide range of people, and his voice has become the voice of millions of compatriots. Shajarian's concerts, even abroad, in every corner of the world, turned it into a corner of the homeland for all Iranians.
Mohammad Reza Shajarian was with the people wherever he was. He did not bow to the power. The secret of his success among the people, in addition to his magical voice, was his admirable character and humility. Resistance to tyranny, in one of the most difficult historical moments of the country, made him a symbol of the people’s resistance. During the height of the protests in 2009, Shajarian stood by the people, who in the eyes of the leaders of the Islamic Republic were nothing more than "scum" and were suppressed by the regime. He became the voice of “scum” and called for the gun to be dropped.
We, the three secular and democratic Republican organizations and parties, extend our condolences on the death of the legendary Iranian singer to the people of Iran, his family, his wife, his artist children Homayoun and Mojgan, and to all music and art lovers in Iran. Loss of Master Shajarian has saddened all his devotees all over Iran. It should be noted that if a people elected government were in power in Iran, the days of farewell to Shajarian would be declared public mourning. It is a pity that this is not the case.
Shajarian's voice will forever be a source of enthusiasm for the people and inspiration for new generations of artists in this land. His name and memory will be with us forever!
