We Support the Strike of Haft Tappeh Workers!

We Demand the Right to Strike and Workers’ Independent Organization!

Thirty days have passed since the rightful strike of thousands of Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company workers. On July 14, repressive security agents brutally raided a gathering of Haft Tappeh workers who had gathered in front of the Shush governor's office for litigation. They arrested four striking workers; Muslim Cheshmeh Khavar, Yousef Bahmani, Ebrahim Abbasi and Mohammad Khanifar and transferred them to Dezful prison. Meanwhile, despite the conviction of his billion-dollar embezzlement in court, Omid Asadbeigi, the corrupt managing director of the complex, is still free and avoids paying workers’ wages and debts to social security.

These arrests came after all the tricks and threats of government and judicial officials to force the workers to end their strike were unsuccessful, and Haft Tappeh's CEO refused to even accept the wishy-washy decisions of the provincial security administration and the July 6 meeting of the Ministry of Labor. Workers' representatives were not present at that meeting and three members of the Islamic Council were invited instead. The workers consider the threatening and biased resolution of these two government institutions, which was enacted in their absence against their interests and reject it. They have stated that the representatives of the Islamic Labor Council are not their elected representatives and do not represent them and their demands.

The demands of the workers are the payment of arrears of wages and premiums, return to work of Ismail Bakhshi and Mohammad Khanifar, who were previously fired, release of imprisoned workers, abolition of privatization, and return of properties looted by Asad Beigi and his associates and their punishment. As a result of widespread protests by workers’ rights activists and the continuation of the Haft Tappeh workers' strike, the detainees were released on bail yesterday.

The company shareholders created this strike and previous strikes by not paying workers’ wages and premiums for months, cutting off their side benefits and trampling the workers' union rights. Corrupt government institutions that arrest and repress right-seeking workers instead of arresting and punishing delinquent and law-breaking employers are far more criminal than employers. We consider the right to strike and protest and to have a union to be an obvious right of the workers, therefore, as a party that fights for the rights of workers and wage earners, we support the Haft Tappeh workers’ strike and their demands and condemn their detention. We demand that workers’ demands must be solemnly addressed by negotiating with their real and elected representatives, securing the right to strike and strictly observing their union rights.

The Left Party of Iran (People’s Fadaian) values the vigilant solidarity of the Haft Tappeh workers who have so far been able to continue their one-month strike by standing up for their demands, and urges the continuation of the struggle to achieve their demands. The only way for the workers is to continue the strike, to stand up for their demands and to find appropriate solutions to thwart the strike-breaking efforts. It is now the urgent duty of all trade unions and the justice-lover forces to rise up in every possible way with the broad support of the Haft Tappeh workers' strike and to try to secure the support and solidarity of the workers and freedom-loving forces from the demands of the strikers.
