Dear Madam President and the Members of the European Union,

We are writing to convey our profound concern regarding the recent military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran. The subsequent retaliation by the Islamic Republic, targeting Israel and United States bases in several regional countries, has significantly escalated tensions. Civilian areas and infrastructure across the region have been damaged, and the conflict has effectively expanded beyond its initial scope.

Given the European Union’s declared commitment to multilateralism, diplomacy, and the rule of law, we urge you to treat this situation with the utmost urgency and to take meaningful steps aimed at de-escalation and the preservation of international peace and security.

Assertions that these attacks were an unavoidable and evidence-based response to an imminent nuclear threat have not been conclusively verified. Recent U.S. intelligence assessments, along with statements from the International Atomic Energy Agency, indicate that there is no definitive proof of an active Iranian program to develop nuclear weapons. While Israel has characterized its actions as “pre-emptive,” and Donald Trump has framed them as a response to Iran’s refusal to accept his negotiation terms, such justifications remain deeply contested under international law.

It is therefore deeply regrettable that, rather than prioritizing efforts to halt hostilities, several European governments have focused on condemning Iran’s retaliatory actions, a stance that has been widely perceived as tacit support for the initial military strikes by the United States and Israel.

Equally troubling is the fact that the states conducting these attacks are themselves nuclear-armed and have resisted concrete initiatives aimed at establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, an objective long supported by the majority of countries in the region and repeatedly raised within the United Nations framework.

In this critical moment, we call upon the European Union to adopt an independent and principled position: to oppose actions that contravene international law and the principles of the UN Charter, to promote active diplomatic solutions, and to press for an immediate ceasefire. Protecting the lives and rights of the Iranian people and preventing further regional destabilization must be central to Europe’s response.
